Add to Shortlist

Days 1-2 Negombo

Welcome to Sri Lanka, an island nation of sunny sands, exotic scents and mouth-tingling spices. Relax on Negombo’s sweeping coastline and then dine on the catch of the day at a seafood restaurant. Visit a coconut plantation in Maravilla and taste-test their fiery coconut sambal. Master traditional snacks, such as hoppers and paratha, at street stalls.

Day 3 Anuradhapura

Sri Lanka's most extensive and important ancient city, Anuradhapura was ruled by Sinhalese kings when it rose to its glittering greatness over 2,200 years ago. Gain insight into the preparation of Sri Lanka's short eats - delectable bite-size morsels available at hole-in the wall vendors - on tasting tour. Next, take a cycling trip around some of Anuradhpura’s sacred sites. Finish the day with a local family and assist in the preparations for the evening meal.

Day 4 Dambulla

Explore the impressive cave temples of Dambulla. In the afternoon, wander amongst exotic produce at the wholesale markets.

Day 5 Sigiriya

Built as a royal citadel on top of a 200m high rock mass, Sigiriya is an impressive fortress with some fantastic views, glorious water gardens and 5th-century frescoes. Admire the views from atop spectacular Sigiriya, before touring an aromatic spice plantation.

Day 6 Kandy

Sri Lanka's culture capital, Kandy is a pleasant city surrounded by lush green countryside - it's home to a picturesque lake, old shops, a bustling market and some great restaurants. Visit the impressive Temple of the Tooth, then make dana (offerings) to the local monks. Later, witness a traditional Kandyan dance performance before learning the art of preparing string hoppers at the home of a local family.

Days 7-8 Haputale

High-tail it to Sri Lanka’s lush hill country and discover the tea plantations for which the country is renowned. Sample the distinct aromas and flavours of Tamil cuisine over lunch with a local family.

Sink your sweet tooth into traditional desserts like vadi and aluwa on a visit to Sinhalese family, noting the epicurean influence of former colonial powers Portugal and the Netherlands. Travel on to Mirrissa and spend time on the beach before meeting the local stilt fishermen for an insight into their lives.
