Days 3-4 Bagan

Jump on a bike and spend the day cycling among the thousands of pagodas – including Bagan's first temple, the grand Shwezigon – that sit beside the Ayeyarwaddy. Perhaps take a break from temple hopping to check out Nyaung U market for an insight into the local life and culture.

Days 5-7 Mandalay

Rise early for a cruise along the Ayeyarwaddy River en route to Mandalay, waving to friendly locals along the way. Take in the patterns of life on the river as fisherman haul in the day’s catch on the water’s edge, children play in the water and women wash their laundry against the pebbles. Arrive in Mandalay in the late afternoon and discover why Mandalay is referred to as Burma’s ‘Jewel City’. Then, in free time, perhaps jump aboard the river express and head to the sacred site of Mingun, take in a puppet show at the Mandalay Marionettes or visit Mahamuni Paya, a stately temple resplendent in a layer of golden leaves.

Day 8 Kalaw

Travel via the world’s longest teak bridge to the small town of Kalaw. Relish the temperate climate and stunning scenery of this former hill station, which is also a popular start and stop point for some of the best trekking in Burma. Rise with the sun and embark on a hike through pine forests to the rarely visited alpine villages. Stop and share a cup of tea with the locals, who still live a very traditional life.

Days 9-11 Inle Lake

Make tracks to the rural charms of Inle Lake, where timber homes sit above the water on stilts, fresh produce grows on floating gardens and Intha fisherman row traditional boats with one leg wrapped around the paddle to keep both hands free for fishing. Spend time visiting the floating markets and in free time perhaps enjoy a walk in the surrounding countryside or explore the sights sprawled around the lake's border by bicycle.

Days 12-13 Kyaiktiyo/Bago

Embark on a long journey to one of the most sacred Buddhist sights in Burma – Mt Kyaiktiyo or the 'Golden Rock'. Drive five hours to Kyaiktiyo before transferring to an open truck to continue the drive up a steep hill to Rathedaung. From here, trek along a Buddhist pilgrim trail to the Golden Rock, a gold-leaf boulder, perched on the edge of a cliff. Spend a spiritual night near this holy site. The following day, descend the summit before visiting Bago to see the reclining 55-metre-long Shwethalyaung Budhha.

Days 14-15 Yangon

Farewell scenic Shan State and head back to the nation’s capital. Take time to visit more highlights in this surprising city before the tour comes to an end. Perhaps unravel a little more Burmese history in the National Museum, enjoy a stroll along the vibrant Strand or join the throngs at one of the city’s markets. Why not mark the end of this experience with a group dinner before bidding this remarkable country farewell.
