Travel to Broome before heading to a hollow boab tree that was once used as a prison and journeying down the bumpy Gibb River Road. At Tunnel Creek in the ancient Napier Ranges, hear the legend of an Indigenous rebel who used the underground caves as a hideout, evading capture for years. Grab torches and embark on a guided walk through the watery cavern before a swim in an idyllic waterhole. Camp beneath the cliffs at Windjana Gorge and enjoy a barbecue dinner under a sparkling Kimberley sky.
Exploring the Kimberley Range gorges, venture deep into a million-year-old reef. Learn about the area's Dreamtime legends. Drop in at the Imintji Aboriginal community for lunch then enjoy an afternoon swim among water lilies and the remnant rainforests of Galvans Gorge. Pitch tents at Mt Barnett Cattle Station and relax by a shady billabong.
After sunrise in the Kimberley, start the morning with a true-blue bush shower at a waterfall oasis, admiring rust-coloured rock faces. Explore wandering streams and come face-to-face with local birds and mammals. Go west to the tranquil waterhole at Adcock Gorge, which will be a refreshing escape from the midday heat. In Silent Grove, relax by the campfire in the shadow of the mighty King Leopold Ranges.
Cool off below cascading waterfalls and in the crystal clear pools of Bell Gorge - a hidden highlight of the Kimberley - or bask on the rocky ledges like the local reptiles do. This is an easy place to while away a few hours. Return to Broome, the Kimberley's tropical capital, through outback cattle country.
