About Australia

4X4 Kimberley Cruiser Summary

Add to Shortlist

Day 1 Darwin/Katherine

Farewell the sultry streets of Darwin and journey south to the tiny township of Adelaide River. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the pools at Edith Falls before making tracks to Katherine Gorge. Choose between a relaxing sojourn through this spectacular area by boat, or paddle down Katherine River in a canoe, watching out for beady eyes lurking on the riverbank. Arrive at the historic Springvale Homestead for a night under the clear desert sky.

Day 2 Kununurra

Crossing the border into Western Australia, the tour continues to Lake Argyle for a cruise along its calm waters. Keep eyes peeled for an abundance of native Australian wildlife, including the cranky crocodile - so be sure to have cameras at the ready. With an appetite built up, it's time to partake in a quintessential Australian Outback experience, a sausage sizzle lunch. If time permits, perhaps cool off with a swim in a croc-free pool before heading back to set up camp.

Days 3-4 El Questro

Visit the Zebra Rock Gallery which showcases unique arts and crafts from the East Kimberley Ranges and explore one of the world's largest unspoilt frontiers, El Questro. Wake up with a soothing soak in the thermal pools at Zebedee Springs and then head off to explore more towering gorges in the region.

Days 5-6 Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Ranges)

Marvel at the impressive landforms 20 million years in the making at the Bungle Bungle Ranges. Explore these amazing striped rock domes and spend time wandering through Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm. Perhaps choose an optional scenic flight for an unforgettable 360-degree outlook over this timeless landscape.

Day 7 Fitzroy Crossing

Hit the Northern Highway heading towards Halls Creek and on to the famous Fitzroy Crossing. Settle in for the night in a true Outback town.

Day 8 Windjana Gorge

Journey into the stunning Geikie Gorge to see multi-coloured rock cliffs. Look out for more riverbank characters like fresh-water crocodiles, birds, dingoes and wallabies. Enjoy a dark and mysterious underground tour of Tunnel Creek and spend the night beneath the sheer cliffs of Windjana Gorge.

Day 9 Broome

Discover the grim history of the infamous Boab Prison Tree, once used to hold local outlaws, before arriving on the clear shores of beautiful Broome. With its romantic pearling history, turquoise waters, red sandstone cliffs and atmospheric Chinatown, it is well worth staying on in Broome for a few more days. In fact, visitors usually don't want to leave!
