Arrive in Hobart, Tasmania's state capital and Australia's second-oldest city. As this trip departs for the island's west coast early on the first day, consider arriving a few days early to explore the city's attractive waterfront and amazing bar and restaurant scene. Wind through the Derwent Valley to Mt Field National Park and Russell Falls. Stop by Lake St Clair, the country's deepest freshwater lake, before finishing the day in Strahan with a barbecue dinner.
Travel to Ocean Beach and perhaps find whale bones lying half submerged in the shifting sands of the Henty Dunes. Get to know the Strahan area and its river systems via any number of optional activities on offer: embark on a cruise along the Gordon River, catch a scenic flight over the Franklin, jet boat up the King or simply hire a kayak and paddle your way around the harbour.
