About Peru

Amazon Jungle Cruise - 4 Days Summary

Add to Shortlist

Day 1 Iquitos/Board MV Aqua

Arrive to Iquitos to begin the Amazonian slice of the trip. Climb aboard a boat and set sail down the Amazon River. Relax and watch the sunset while floating down the river with a glass of fine South American wine.

Day 2 Tahuayo River/Charo Lake/Yacapana Islands

Relax on board the boat or perhaps partake in a spot of fishing on Charo Lake. Cruise down the Tahuayo River while being on the look out for some native wildlife such as terns, monkeys and sloths. Later, visit the Yacapana Islands, or ‘Iguana Islands’ as the locals call it, and go dolphin sightseeing.

Day 3 Maranon River/Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve

Chat to a knowledgeable naturalist guide about the sustainable resource management projects that are currently in place in the Amazon and visit a village to see one of these projects in action. There might also be the opportunity to see artificial nests that were created on the sand to protect turtle eggs. Later, delve deep into the jungle and learn about the medicinal properties of native plant life and track some cheeky primates. If the season is right, spot a bizarre species of pink dolphins, only found in the Amazon River. At dusk, keep eyes peeled to see the creepier, crawlier residents of the jungle – tree boas, tarantulas and frogs.

Day 4 Yucuruche Lake/Puerto Prado Village/Iquitos

Walk into the heart of the jungle to view the world’s largest aquatic plant – the giant water lily – with leaves that span up to 3 m and stalks that delve 7 to 8 m underwater. Later, board a skiff and head to the spot where the two major tributaries of the Amazon meet, creating the world’s greatest waterway. Venture onto land and meet the villagers of Puerto Prado. After a tour of their rural homes, perhaps purchase some unique arts and crafts to take home as a souvenir. After lunch, head to a manatee rescue centre before jumping on a plane and heading home.
