This Kimberley adventure kicks off early to ensure you'll get most out of the day. First stop is an invigorating dip in the natural springs of Edith Falls; quite a lovely wake-up call. Carry on to the town of Katherine, where you'll investigate Nitmiluk Gorge – and its cultural significance – on a Nitnit Dreaming Cultural Cruise.
Cross the state border into Western Australia. Coming to Lake Argyle, board a boat for a Triple J Tour out across this flourishing man-made aquatic eco-system.
Start off southbound along the Great Northern Highway to Purnululu National Park. Hard though it might be to believe, the park's defining landscape – the Bungle Bungle rock domes – were unknown to the outside world prior to 1980. With two days here, there's ample time to take in the area's primary attractions: Echidna Chasm and Cathedral Gorge.
Prepare for two days of idyllic isolation in the El Questro Wilderness Park. Spend your hours exploring the region's various gorges by foot or watercraft, or just settle back and soak up the solitude.
Covering more than 1 million acres and home to over 10,000 head of cattle, the Drysdale River Station offers yet another sense of the Australian outback's size and scale. Set out for an explore, or experience true-blue pub culture with a 'coldie' at the 'local'.
Veering off-road and across the Mitchell Plateau by 4WD is always a real highlight of this trip. Fording rivers and rambling through ancient Livistonia palm forests, you'll emerge on the savannah where two days of camping in the National Park await. Your time here will include the chance of a dip in the Little and Big Merten Falls, a viewing of the Bradshaw rock art, and, if you so choose, a helicopter flight over the area.
Experience something of the jackaroo life with a night camped out in Mt Elizabeth Station Homestead. This is the Kimberley's classic cattle country: set out for a clamber about the rocky rises, seek out a waterhole to wallow in or trade tall tales around the camp fire.
Following a bit of drive time, stop in for a swim at lovely Adcock Gorge before continuing on to Silent Grove. Wile away the afternoon dividing your attentions between the hidden waterfalls and tranquil swimming holes of Bell Gorge.
Many millions of years ago a submerged reef, Windjana Gorge these days harbours an immensity of native Australian wildlife. Winding through the gorge's humungous rock walls, search for freshwater crocodiles and learn to identify indigenous bush tucker before pitching camp for the night.
Descend into the subterranean world of Tunnel Creek, a 750-metre cave complex from which the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra waged his guerrilla war against European settlers. Following a freshening-up in a nearby waterhole, begin the journey on to Broome, making a stop at Derby's 'Boab Prison Tree'.
