Day 1 El Calafate

Arrive in El Calafate, a small town humming with tourists on their way to see the glacier. The town derives its name from a native berry, which when eaten supposedly assures a return trip to Patagonia. Relax during the day before a welcome meeting in the evening.

Days 2-3 Perito Moreno Glacier/El Calafate

Today's main event is a full tour of the spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier. Sitting some 70 m tall and approximately 5 km wide, this is one jaw-droppingly enormous slab of ice. The highlight of the southern region of Los Glaciares National Park, Perito Moreno is one of only three glaciers in Patagonia that is not retreating, and one of 48 that is fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Take in the power of nature from the safety of a platform as the glacier creaks and groans, and mammoth chunks of ice break off and crash into the water below. There's also the option of taking a short boat trip onto the lake to get up close and personal with this overshadowing ice giant. Alternately, both sides of the glacier can be observed on a walking circuit. Return to El Calafate, where this short but sweet trip ends on arrival. Perhaps sign up for the El Chalten Trekking adventure to see more of this incredible region.
