After five years of sprints, squats and step curls – give or take a few weeks on travels when there hasn’t been a group cycle class to jump in on – a fellow fitness enthusiast recently asked me “Why do you exercise?”
Honestly, I had never contemplated this question before. In five whole years I had not thought about why I put my body through rigorous lobster-face inducing workouts. As we were lying in our dormitory on an adventure through Western Australia, I had to really contemplate my answer. Was it because I loved the freedom of wearing crazy neon vest tops and printed leggings? Was it the weight loss? Was it because of the endorphins? Was it because I suddenly had a whole new group of friends who were all as mad about exercise as me? Or was it the competition with myself?
Getting up close and mixing it with the locals is one of the best things about travel. And you feel even more fortunate if you’ve been able to capture those precious encounters on camera and commit to the memory card!

Yes, it’s that time already. Over the past 12 months, the Intrepid Photography Competition has been bombarded with thousands of incredible images from our travellers.
They’ve come from all corners of the globe, featured all manner of subjects and stirred all kinds of emotions. Seriously, you guys went above and beyond and we can’t thank you enough for your efforts. We were blown away by the talent displayed this year.
Top attractions were on display last round as countries were forced to put their best foot forward.
Italy sent Greece sailing, Brazil outlasted Spain and Japan had Costa Rica zip-lining back to the cloud forest. Argentina edged out iconic France, while Mexico rolled over Chile like a fresh-pressed corn tortilla to book their way into the Quarterfinals.
There are now 8 world-class destinations left to compete for travellers’ hearts. They will each have to dig deep and venture off the beaten path if they plan to advance!
The World Cup of Travel opening round was filled with upsets, as several destinations missed their flights on the way to the round of 16.
Now things shift into high gear as proven players are set to go head-to-head on the road to travel stardom. Brazil vs. Spain will kick off a field full of close calls, while only 8 countries will go on for a chance to compete for the Top Travel Destination title!

“Most people think about chillies in terms of heat and their capacity to blow one’s head off. I think about how they can delicately pep up a pile of silky aubergines, how tobacco-flavoured chillies can add deep mysterious tones to molten chocolate, how smoky chillies can add body to slow cooked stews and how smoked, sweet peppers can add a note of earthiness to eggs, grilled flatbreads and sautéed greens,” Tommi explains.
