What does travel mean to you? We put that question to our friends, Daniel and Mirra at The Perennial Plate, and set them the challenge of showing us what it felt like to experience Intrepid’s grassroots adventures.
Having spent the past year travelling with Intrepid through 12 different countries, they’ve met hundreds of locals, uncovered unique and captivating stories and shot hundreds of hours of extraordinary footage.
“Carpe diem. Seize the day boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” These were the classic words of Robin Williams in the now iconic film Dead Poet’s Society, released in 1989.
Also back in ’89, two 20-something young men called Darrell and ‘Manch’ took these words to heart. They not only made their own lives extraordinary, but those of many thousands of others through the launch of Intrepid Travel, THE classic responsible travel company.
Everyone has power to make real change and impact in the world. Including you. Join in this years Earth Hour on 29 March, and you will be part of the world’s biggest and most engaging grassroots movement.
Of course it’s not just about one hour. It’s about the future of our planet!
Earth Hour is the planet’s single-largest call-to-action on climate change. Through the simple act of turning off lights for one hour, millions of people across the globe come together to raise awareness for this issue and to work on the solutions.
Did you know that 1 in 10 African girls drop out of school when they reach puberty? And the reason? They are unable to manage the changes in their body and don’t have access to sanitary pads.
Intrepid’s SAMA Project partner Plan’s Krissy Nicholson gives a first-hand account of a new project in Uganda designed to keep more girls in school with the simplest of solutions – Afripads, a re-usable, washable cloth pad.
Intrepid is a very proud supporter of the documentary film, I Am A Girl, and are now delighted to say ‘she’ is off to school! A suite of high-school education materials have been launched to coincide with International Women’s Day, 2014, to help address discrimination against women and girls.
Developed by the Documentary Australia Foundation, the materials are based on the ‘I Am A Girl’ documentary, an in-depth look at the reality of what it means to be a girl in the 21st century. Following the lives of six young women, the often confronting documentary addresses issues of family violence, disease, poverty and disadvantage in girls locally and abroad.
We were overwhelmed with the range of breathtaking photos and heartfelt reasons why certain places had a hold of your heart. From stunning scenery, rare wildlife encounters, meaningful exchanges with locals and places that were special for personal moments, the responses were truly inspiring.
So, we thought we would share just a few…
Sure, being in love with a real-life, actual person can be pretty great – we wouldn’t deny that. But sometimes being in love with a place can be pretty special too. It might be the food your place-crush feeds you, the beach strolls it takes you on or just that you met your real-life, actual-person lover there. Whatever the case, places deserve some loving too.
This Valentine’s Day then, we want to know which country – or city, or place – has a hold of your heart.

Egypt’s exotic charms and its extraordinary ancient wonders have enchanted intrepid adventurers for centuries.
Though of course we know Egypt’s recent political history has been troubled, the news of late is not all bad, with very favourable feedback coming in from recent Intrepid travellers and our local staff.
We’ve just launched an exciting initiative for the first few months of 2014.
As part of our commitment to our travellers, Intrepid is undertaking an independent assessment of the strengths and weaknesses in our customer service and relationships. We’ll be conducting an independent and in-depth survey of the service levels we provide to you.
