Favourite travel destination and why

Scotland, because it just took me by surprise how amazing the country is - whether you're visiting and swimming in the Fairy Pools in the Isle of Skye, watching the Edinburgh Tattoo or just having a local pub meal. 
 

Best travel memory

I have so many great travel memories, I could go oon for days, but if I had to pick one, I would definitely pick Oktoberfest - the people, the atmosphere, the culture and history is just unbelievable.
 

Best travel tips

Don’t over pack, photocopy all your documents and cards and make sure you separate them from your originals, try and learn the basic language of the country you're visiting and most of all, have a positive attitude!
 

Favourite food experience

My favourite food experience would probably be eating at places in the back streets around Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I couldn’t see myself eating at those places, but was surprised by the tastiness of the food.

Tell us about you

Part-time Intrepidite, full-time student, full-time lover of travel and other cultures. I’ve worked in travel for 14 years now, with 10 years managing an agency. When the opportunity came up to work part time for Intrepid in Canberra it was serendipity, as they’ve been my favourite travel company for years.  
 

Favourite travel destination and why

Probably Tanzania – the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater are unforgettable. It’s about the natural world for me - sweeping views, sunsets, unbelievable blue water, mountains.  
 

How many countries have you visited?

Up to around 40 now, with hopefully lots more to come. But for me it’s not about the score it’s about the quality of the experience, which is why I’ve been to quite a few of these places more than once. It’s great going back with a bit of knowledge and seeing more than just the ‘main’ sights.

Three weeks Johannesburg to Capetown following the coast most of the way, then a month in Europe on the train from Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden and ending in Prague.
 

Best travel tips

Go with the flow. Let your Mum know you’re OK. Less is more – don’t cram too much in or you don’t really experience anything.
 

Favourite food experience

I don't know where to start! Italy – everything, SE Asia – curries, laksa, hawker food stalls, Turkey – yum.
 

Any advice for people considering embarking on the trip of a lifetime

Again, don’t try to do too much, stop and smell the roses. Don’t stress, it always works out in the end. If you’re on the road for months, plan a day here and there where you stop and do nothing.

Being from a small country town, from a young age I would dream of travelling to faraway places. I experienced my first trip abroad as a teenager on a school trip to China and loved it so much I decided to make travel my job. 
 

Favourite travel destination and why

Nepal - the mighty Himalayan mountains, the sense of calm in the chaos that is Kathmandu, roof-top bars, the instant camaraderie with fellow travellers. Most of all, the humility and humour of the local people.

Cycling in Provence and hiking in the French Alps.

The rush that I feel every time the plane is about to take off! I love the anticipation of what adventures are coming my way.

Keep an open heart and mind, and don’t sweat the small stuff. 
 

Favourite food experience

Eating raw fish that I had just caught myself in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Not the most appetising food I have eaten but it was by far the freshest!
 

Any advice for people considering embarking on the trip of a lifetime

Remember that every trip can be the trip of a lifetime. Whenever we travel away from our home town we open ourselves to a world of experience and possibility. We are so privileged to be able to travel and should make the most of every opportunity. 
 

Which country is next on your list to experience and why

Southern India with Intrepid. I can’t wait to experience one of the world’s most vibrant cultures, see the sights and taste the incredible cuisine.
