The award is part of Los Angeles Magazine’s ‘Best of LA’ awards, announced in the August edition of the Magazine.
An exploration of LA’s ethnic neighbourhoods, the Urban Food Safari takes visitors on a four hour tantalising tour of Koreatown, Little Armenia and Thai town, some of LA’s most vibrant and often hidden areas. Local restaurants, markets, hole-in-the-wall eateries and bakeries provide a multitude of sweet and savoury treats along the way, while historic architecture, stories from locals and riding through East Hollywood on the Metro bus offer a fascinating cultural experience.
The LA Urban Food Safari is run by Summer Davis and her husband Youssef Iferd, who revitalised the tour last year. Their focus was to get off the beaten track and provide authentic local experiences and to do this on foot and public transportation. It has proved incredibly popular with tourists and natives alike, with an overall customer feedback score of 4.85 out of 5.
“I love everything about the tour, from the market visits, to conversing with the local vendors and even meeting locals in their gardens along the street,” said Summer. “All the food we eat is homemade with love – barbecue ribs, spicy Thai soup, Armenian baked goods – all are delicious and represent an important part of our city's colourful fabric.
“We are thrilled to have recognition of the hard work we have put into designing and operating these tours and look forward to hosting many more visitors and Angelenos alike on our fun, eye-opening adventures.”
Summer is a native of Los Angeles and started working at Intrepid Travel as a tour leader in Morocco before becoming the Deputy Operations Manager for Intrepid South America. Her experiences around the world have left her with a fascination of other cultures, languages and food and a love to explore the ethnic enclaves of LA.
The LA Urban Food Safari is part of Intrepid Travel’s Food Adventures – a range of food trips focussing on authentic, local, grassroots food experiences, celebrating street fare, local specialities, secret home recipes, markets and urban food culture.Tuesday, August 6, 2013
